He paused, expectantly.

“Sure,” I said. “ ‘Bracelets on her fingers and everything …’ So what?”

“So what? Jaysus, man, that’s me point. What exactly does everything refer to? That’s what I want to bloody know.”

Liam Gallacher rescued us at that moment, hauling the lad off with a firm hand clasped to his elbow, and we both laughed easily.

“Somebody’s going to get sacked tonight,” Caeli said.

“Somebody should wait ’til the party’s over before nipping the good stuff.”

“Not to worry,” Elmore said as he moved in. “I had my eye on him the whole time.”

Then something interesting happened that caught us both off guard, Caeli especially. During a slowdown in the music, Penn strolled up to Caeli, his smile on full display, and asked her to dance.

She declined politely and in the same breath asked if he wanted to tell her the rest of the story regarding the deaths of the two Irish mercenaries who were now resting for all eternity in a wayside bog, with or without the proverbial fishes.

If he was offended by the question, or the implication that there was more to tell, he didn’t show it.

His smile actually widened – that same thin, enigmatic, fleeting half-grin that we’d spotted previously; there and gone in an instant – and he shook his head sadly from side to side, as though he didn’t want to be the bearer of bad news but had to deliver it just the same.

“I do not know what you think you know, or what you may suspect, but we are on the same side in this matter, Miss Caeli,” he said. “We have nothing to hide, nothing to keep from you, nothing to cover up, I assure you. However, if what we did today is offensive in some way – if you would rather not work with us, for whatever reason – we can arrange for another team to be flown in from Rome.”
